All boards need basic skills such as finance, commercial and legal. The strategic plan will also provide insight into the skills and experience that will be required in the future.

For a charity, future requirements could include board members with fundraising, digital, sectoral, PR, or indeed mergers. Recruiting new board members is a strategic endeavour rather than a tactical one.

The objective of the Nominations Committee should be to recruit board members which will bring the performance of the board to new level, otherwise the organisation will risk stagnation or even it demise in the longer term.
